Biography |
Rebecca Brewer (b. 1983, Tokyo, Japan) is a Vancouver-based artist whose work spans painting, printmaking, and textile-based collage, with a focus on figurative abstraction. Brewer’s practice is deeply rooted in art history, drawing on symbolic, decorative, and mythological imagery to create complex visual languages where recognizable forms emerge and dissolve within layered, textured surfaces. Her recent work includes large-scale felt collages that suggest both the presence and absence of the body—referencing garments, banners, and narrative textiles—as abstract grounds for elusive figures to take shape. Brewer holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and an MFA from Bard College in New York. She has presented solo exhibitions at Exercise and Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver, and Galerie Werner Whitman in Montréal. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at major Canadian institutions such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, SFU’s Audain Gallery, and the Walter Phillips Gallery in Banff. Brewer is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver, and continues to develop a thoughtful, materially rich practice that bridges craft, symbolism, and abstraction. |
